Joker: Folie à Deux’s set pictures reveal a first look at Lady Gaga’s Harley Quinn costume, and it is quite different from recent Harley Quinn adaptations. Though Joaquin Phoenix’s return as the Joker in Joker 2 was already enough to justify the sequel, the addition of Lady Gaga as Harley Quinn makes Folie à Deux even more exciting.

The Joker/Harley film in development is being described as a "criminal love story" in the vein of 1994's Natural Born Killers. A Hollywood Reporter source called it "an insane and twisted love story.

Joining him is the multi-talented Lady Gaga, stepping into the role of Harley Quinn. Her casting, along with rumors of the sequel being a musical, adds an intriguing layer to the film’s prospects.
Harley and the Joker broke up repeatedly in the comics, yet she always returned to him convinced that he really loved her. But in 2013, DC premiered a solo “Harley Quinn” series that broke her Lady Gaga (a butts-in-seats movie star) as Harley Quinn (a marquee character) in a musical sequel to 'Joker' is the kind of idea that makes me excited for a sequel to 'Joker.'

Harley Quinn would go on to appear in Superman: The Animated Series, The New Batman Adventures, Batman Beyond (and the related Return of the Joker film), and Static Shock. The Timmverse version would later return in 2017's Batman and Harley Quinn film, voiced by Melissa Rauch.

The film includes Robbie's Harley Quinn and Viola Davis' Amanda Waller from the first film, but Leto's Joker is, so far, nowhere to be found. This may be the start of another dark age for the character, with his lack of inclusion in the two DCEU movies coming as a direct result of his less than favorable use in the first Suicide Squad.
